‘Antioxidants’ is somewhat of a buzzword now. They are a relatively recent discovery. Here, we’re going to explore the topic of antioxidants in more depth. By the end of this blog, you should have a good idea about what we mean by antioxidant, and whether or not you need to taka an antioxidant supplement, such as acai capsules.
What Is an Antioxidant?
An antioxidant is a substance that helps to prevent and lessen the cell damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are atoms that are missing an electron. This losing of an electron is usually caused by oxygen, thus the link between oxidisation and free radicals. Free radicals move through the body attempting to ‘steal’ electrons off healthy cells to stabilise their state (an atom always wants to be in a stable condition). Antioxidants provide free radicals with their required electron and thus prevent the free radicals from damaging healthy cells.
Where Do We Find Antioxidants?
Antioxidants can be manufactured or they can occur naturally. We can find antioxidants in many types of food, particularly brightly coloured fresh fruit and vegetables – particularly berries, such as those found in acai capsules.
It is important to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables so that you can increase the number of antioxidants in your body and thereby reduce the number of free radicals.
If you cannot eat a balanced diet then a supplement will work. However, it is important that you don’t eat too many antioxidants because while we know that they are essential, we are unsure about the consumption of antioxidants in large volumes. There can be too much of a good thing.
As with everything in life: everything in moderation, even things that are good for you.
